R.A.W. (‘CAUSE I’M a Woman) is one of the Drama poems in Reader, Which talks about Asian woman.  It is about people opinions about Asian woman.   However, she said “I will not kill myself to save your son, I will not light your cigarette afterward.”  Her mom tells her do not bring anyone at home because she is making food and home smells like Kimchee.  She says maybe she is ugly, but her heart is beautiful; however the guys, who met her and did not like her, are ugly inside and outside.

GALLIMARD committed suicide because he found out that SONG is a man.  He understood that SONG betrayed him to get information.  GALLIMARD did not kill himself only because he gave the confidential information to a spy man (song), also because he wasted his life for twenty years by loving the spy man.  GALIMARD killed himself because of the spy man who played as an oriental modesty dancer.

Why was SONG lying to GALLIMARD all the time?

SONG was lying to GALLIMARD to get information for his country.  However, SONG had a good knowledge about western men which learned from his mom.  “Rule one is:  Men always believe what they want to hear.  So a girl can tell the most obnoxious lies and the guys will believe them every time-“this is my first time”-‘that’s the biggest I’ve ever seen”-or both, which, if you really think about it, is not possible in a single lifetime” (61).

We were asked in the class to find the lies in M. BUTTERFLY.  One of the lies that I found is; CHIN. Don’t forget: there is no homosexuality in china! 

Actually there is homosexuality in china, but it is illegal.  So CHIN asked SONG to have the idea which is not true.

GALLIMARD: This was not acceptable.  But I kept up our affair, wildly, for several months.  Why?  I believe because of Butterfly.  She knew the secret I was trying to hide.  But, unlike a Western woman, she didn’t confront me, threaten, even pout.  I remembered the words of Puccini’s Butterfly:

Yesterday we talked about hubris or over confidence in the class and how Song used this strategy to get information from Gallimard.  Song tried to admire and make him happy that he can get information from Gallimard.  We also talked about countries which they believed they could overcome over some small counties and they couldn’t because of over confidence.
